Vampire Movie Poster Picks

Seems like ever since summer started Moeruhime has dominated all our internet access just to download her addiction for the season.  I don’t want to mention her addiction right here as if you go to her own blog, you’d see them plastered everywhere and mentioned every entry.  Just take a look for yourself, moeruhime.i.ph.

Most of us have been busy, basically, living.  As classes started today, and with Moeru Hime starting next week, we have more time having our turn on the internet.  We do have our own computers.  But everytime we’re online, she bugs us to put in Keyhole so she can watch her addiction in real time.  We’d love to put Keyhole in.  But, we, as big brothers, are afraid that she might not do anything else anymore.

Enough about our littlest sister.  Moving on to me.

For a film fanatic, I’m guilty of not following the Cannes Film Festival closely.  Filipino Director Brilliante “Dante” Mendoza won best director in this year’s festival for his movie KINATAY (another oops! for me as I haven’t seen the movie — due to the fact that I don’t know where to catch it — I know excuses)

But it is Park Chan Wook’s creation that stirred my interest once more.  Winning the third top honor — JURY PRIZE — for THIRST revived my engrossment for Vampire literature in all medium.  For me, the combination of Park Chan Wook and Vampires is priceless.  [Sadly, it seems that it paled in comparison to OLDBOY (which will soon be bastardized by Hollywood) as OLDBOY got up to 2nd honors]

In SNARKERATI, they posted the TOP 70 VAMPIRE MOVIES OF ALL TIME. I mostly agree with their choices.  However, as this was posted a couple of years back, a handful of great Vampire movies have come out already that didn’t make the cut.  Here are my additions to the list — and what do you know — it’s also posters I’d like to have on my bedroom wall (which will eventually adorn my own condo unit once I get to own one).

I’ll have to cut here since heavy graphics are on its way.

Firstly, what I’ve been talking about since almost the begining of this entry.  Park Chan Wook’s Thirst. Although I have not seen it — and most likely will not see it in its wide screen glory — I’m anticipating the fansubber’s release. So far the reviews make it sound worth waiting for.  And, don’t you think the poster makes you want to see more?

I’m pretty biased when it comes to Park Chan Wook.  There are [currently] only two directors that I’d want to be like in this lifetime — and that’s Park Chan Wook and Wong Kar Wai.  That’s why when I finish my first movie, I’d put in a three-one-syllable name as director as well (that’s a hyperbole).

A few months back, I heard a movie (courtesy of Joe Loves Crappy Movies) about vampires that recovered vampire lovers’ trust in the movie industry.  See, after Twilight was shown (and yes, we just had to see it in the big screen and I’m thankful that I didn’t pay for my tickets yet sad that my friend had to pay for such c–p twice over) I was sort of appaled that vampires were pictured that way.  It wasn’t just the sappiness of the story, everything about it — in my perspective — was wrong. I’m actually surprised by two things — that body glitter didn’t come back in style to make everyone look like a Twilight Vampire — and that there are actually two more sequels coming up.  I’m proud that my tiny sister never succumb to this sappy love story and actually liked the one I showed her which is — LET THE RIGHT ONE IN.

This one is about a boy getting bullied and a vampire (sex unknown but is popularly accepted to be a girl) who protects him and a friendship that knows no fear.  If you’re into the classic vampires who burst into flames when hit by sunlight, and bleeds out from every hole when they force theselves into a house uninvited, and turns humans into vampires without the exchange of blood — then this is your movie.  Not only is it visually appealing, the story is cohesive and it’s not sappy.  Even though it can be considered a love story, IT’S NOT SAPPY AT ALL.

I thought Underworld was a rocking movie especially for people who played the table top RPG Vampire: The Masquerade from White Wolf.  It was better than the White Wolf sanctioned and short-lived T.V. series KINDRED: THE EMBRACED.

I thought Underworld: Evolution shouldn’t have been made at all.  

So when I heard that there would be a third installment, I was hesitant.  But when I was told that it’s a prequel I gave it a chance (to the demise of my friend who other than being a vampire freak, is also into Kate Beckinsale).  Saw it in wide screen.  And I’m glad that I did. 

Though, it had it’s sappy moments and questionable lore, the intense action made up for everything else.  Of course, we all love Viktor — the bad ass elder who tried to control everything in his care. Also, if you’re into Werewolves, the story mostly focuses on these race.  I’m not much into wolves — my vanity shoves me to lean towards vampires.  However, if I’d be as awesome as Lucian, then I’m ok with it.  Give it a chance, and you’d get my point.

Lastly, this technically made the TOP 70 VAMPIRE MOVIES OF ALL TIME at number 36. The original anime version blew me away almost nine years ago.  A friend of mine who had access to the latest anime releases during VHS days (yeah, 2000 was still VHS days in the Philippines) lent me a copy not knowing I had a thing for vampires.  Saya became one of my lovers (well at least in my head).

Now, Saya is brought to life by Gianna Jun (My Sassy Girl, Il Mare) through this live-action adaptation.  I remember planning a blog entry about this a few months back when they were still in the middle of shooting and only production images have been released. Gianna Jun is joined by Koyuki (The Last Samurai) as the big bad in this movie.  The trailer is up; enjoy then.  I doubt it’ll reach the Philippine cinema, but if ever it does come out here, you’ll see me at the start of the line somewhere in Shang (unless it’ll be shown in IMAX — then you’ll see me in MOA).

The next two posters are just special mentions.  Why?  Because there’re vampires.  And there’re lesbians.  And there’re lesbian vampires. Who wouldn’t like lesbian vampires?

This is the original one — originally featured in 1970.  I actually downloaded the movie (good luck finding a certified copy here in our country) but I couldn’t find a subtitle file.  So one of my siblings eventually erased it to give more space for other downloads (probably Moeru for her Japanese variety shows).  It’s a classic. Lots of nudities bordering soft porn.  I wish I could just understand what they were saying.

Then a new one emerges. It’s not a remake.  It has a very different plot (at least I got the plot contextually when I watched Vampiros Lesbos). But again — vampire lesbians.  Worth looking at. You judge for yourself.  Here’s the trailer.  And here’s the poster:
